OCT Eye Scans in Exeter

An OCT scan provides a highly detailed view of your eye health and helps detect problems at an earlier stage. This allows us to examine the deeper layers of the retina and optic nerve in far greater detail than a standard eye examination alone.

*The scan is quick, painless and non-invasive.

What Is an OCT Scan?

OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It’s an advanced imaging scan that uses light waves to create a detailed 3D image of the structures at the back of your eye, including:

The retina
The macula
The optic nerve
The vitreous

*An OCT scan allows us to see beneath the surface, layer by layer. This gives a clearer understanding of subtle changes that may not yet be affecting your vision.

What Can an OCT Scan Detect?

OCT technology helps identify early signs of several serious eye conditions, including:

Glaucoma
Age-related macular degeneration
Diabetic retinopathy
Macular holes
Retinal abnormalities

*Many of these conditions develop gradually, and early detection allows for earlier monitoring, management or referral if needed.

What Happens During an OCT Scan?

The scan takes only a few seconds per eye. You’ll be asked to rest your chin on a support and look at a target light. The scanner does not touch your eye and does not cause discomfort.

Thousands of images are captured using reflected light. These are analysed to assess the health of the eye’s deeper layers, and your results will be explained clearly during your appointment.
